Pleural Mesothelioma Causes and Treatments

People can find the indication or symptoms including pleural lining calcification or thickening which is commonly diagnosed as pleural plaques although it is also seen as pre cursor to pleural mesothelioma.

Once people are diagnosed with this cancer, it can spread pretty quickly to other part of body including outer chest wall, heart, as well as abdomen. It will be fatal within one year after diagnosis. However, with early awareness and understanding about risk factor, people can manage this cancer with several treatment options.



The only cause which can make people suffer of pleural mesothelioma is asbestos exposure.
Asbestos which was used a lot as building material and industrial compounds can spread into microscopic size and enter the body. Unfortunately, this fiber is very durable so it cannot be expelled from the body once it enters the internal tissue.

The asbestos fiber can enter body through inhalation and it will lodge on the outer lung tissue layer as well as within the pleura. Because it is very delicate structure, pleural plaques can be formed on its surface due to the microscopic asbestos fiber which is lodged on the membrane. The pleural plaques can be developed into tumor cell after many years.


There are some treatments which can be taken for people who are diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma.

  1. The first treatment option is surgery. However, this treatment will be difficult to be performed to the patient who is diagnosed in later stages. Surgery can be utilized for slowing the disease advance in early stage.
  2. The next treatment option which should be taken as well by patient with this cancer is chemotherapy. There are several different drugs for chemotherapy which will be utilized for this cancer management. Of course the drug should be approved by Food and Drug Administration such as the combination of Alimta and Cisplatin.

Nevertheless, there are also other clinical trials of chemotherapy drug which can show effectiveness for treating the cancer. Radiation therapy is used for treating for various kinds of cancer including pleural mesothelioma. Of course it should be combined with other treatment for managing cancer for slowing the growth and spread of tumor cell.

There are also some other alternative as well as complementary therapies which can be involved for managing the cancer.
