Basically, there are various factors that might cause hyperglycemia in diabetes. One of the most common causes of hyperglycemia in diabetes is forgetting your insulin or skipping your oral medicine. If you forget to take your insulin, you might have hyperglycemia since the blood sugar will rise easily. Other common causes of hyperglycemia in diabetes are including infection, illness, increased stress, decreased exercises or activity, and eating too many foods with high amount of carbohydrate. The symptoms of hyperglycemia are basically quite similar to the symptoms of diabetes. Based on its level, hyperglycemia might be categorized into three levels, mild hyperglycemia, moderate hyperglycemia, and severe hyperglycemia. Each level might show different symptoms. Other symptoms of mild hyperglycemia are including increased appetite, dry mouth, and dry skin. Dry mouth and dry skin are basically caused by dehydration which is considered as the effect of high level of blood sugar. Moderate to severe hyperglycemia might show different symptoms from mild hyperglycemia. Blurred vision and extreme thirst are considered as two of the most common symptoms of high blood sugar in moderate or severe level. Other symptoms that might appear in moderate to severe hyperglycemia are including lightheadedness, dry skin, drowsiness, restlessness, difficulty waking up, rapid breathing, weak pulse, fast heart rate, fruity breath odor, belly pain and vomiting. Loss of appetite, slow-healing sores, and intestinal problems are also considered as common symptoms in moderate to severe hyperglycemia.
